Whitley Castle

The Roman fort at Whitley Castle is located just west of the A689 near Castle Nook, 2 miles north-west of Alston. The view here is of the north-western ridge looking south as the winter’s afternoon sun dips to the horizon and highlights the frost covered defensive ditches, which are all that is left of this ancient fort. Believed to have been called Epiacum, and suitably for this time of year the modern meaning for this name is ‘the castle in the white clearing’.
