This view of an ancient slab stone bridge is looking east towards the start of the Old Corpse Road at the head of Haweswater Reservoir, as the sunrises over Mardale Common. This shot was taken at a solitary 7am and the area was charged with atmosphere, a combination of grandeur and great beauty, yet tinged with melancholy of the life there once was in the lost village of Mardale a stones throw away.
I visited this location after the floods of January 2005 and was saddened to see the bridge had washed away, lost forever..
